چکیده
Laboratory and clinical observations of patients with a large-fiber somatic sensory neuropathy indicate a dramatic inability of these patients to set accurate tonic or phasic levels of muscle activity needed to maintain static postures and to reproduce simple movements. These observations suggest that somatic sensation contributes to sensations of motor output, previously thought to be mediated by central mechanisms of corollary discharge. "Ve review' data describing psychophysical performance on weightmatching tasks and discuss new experiments on reaching tasks done by patients with a large-fiber sensory neuropathy and normal controls. In combination, the data show that patients with peripheral sensory deficits exhibit an impaired sense of muscular effort and the consequences of active movement. In addition, the data on weight matching indicate that the basis of disrupted effort sense relates to an inability to correlate psychophysical decisions with concomitant muscle activity. In new experiments, accuracy to match actively achieved arm end points by pointing was decreased in patients with largefiber sensory neuropathy. The collective results suggest that appreciation of motor output is mediated in part by peripheral return from somatic sensory afferent systems.

TO THE EDITOR: Neurobiological aspects of the regulation of exercise by the central nervous system (CNS) are poorly understood and have been studied mainly to understand central fatigue (i.e., a progressive decline in the drive to motoneurons) as during prolonged strenuous exercise in humans under conditions of hyperthermia (6). The predominance of centrally originating neural signals in the pe...
متن کاملCommentaries on Viewpoint: Perception of effort during exercise is independent of afferent feedback from skeletal muscles, heart, and lungs PERCEPTION OF EFFORT: IT IS WHAT WE THINK WE KNOW THAT KEEPS US FROM LEARNING
TO THE EDITOR: Perception of effort during dynamic whole body exercise is a subjective interpretation of an integrative signal, which probably resides from peripheral and central mechanisms. Marcora (1) clearly provides arguments that the perception of effort during exercise might be independent from afferent feedback from different systems (cardiovascular, muscular, pulmonary). Another example...
متن کاملCharacterization of mouse lumbar splanchnic and pelvic nerve urinary bladder mechanosensory afferents.
Sensory information from the urinary bladder is conveyed via lumbar splanchnic (LSN) and sacral pelvic (PN) nerves to the spinal cord. In the present report we compared the mechanosensitive properties of single afferent fibers in these two pathways using an in vitro mouse bladder preparation. Mechanosensitive primary afferents were recorded from the LSN or PN and distinguished based on their re...
متن کاملMotor control and position sense: action-perception coupling.
This chapter focuses on the relationship between motor control and position sense (PS) defined as the ability of humans to recognize the position of body segments under different conditions. Studies showed that afferent signals from proprioceptive and cutaneous and, to a lesser degree, articular receptors satisfactorily reflect passive changes in the position of body segments (Matthews 1972; Ed...
